Motorcycle Gear

REVIEW: DMD Rocket

Buying a motorcycle helmet isn’t an easy task any day of the week. It's illegal to ride without one and, of course, your ego will creep in demanding you look half decent. In addition, when you start out, you’ll be lumped with specs which mean nothing to you yet and “helpful” advice from everyone who walks through the bike store. Result? One helluva confused and bewildered new rider.

ROAD STYLE: Nina

A thrifty Doll, fashionista Nina is renowned for her ability to hunt out a stylish bargain, whether online or at a charity shop. Nina makes the vintage look her own by customizing the items she finds, as is seen here with her folded down boots. Her helmet is an open faced Bell and she is riding a Yamaha SR400.

ROAD STYLE: Kinga

Adventurous in life as well as in fashion, Kinga shows us her street style, a departure from her off-road gear as seen in the Petrolette feature. Kinga’s look here oozes rockstar, with her leather look Sass & Bide jeans and perfectly worn in boots being nicely set off by the star features on her Icon riding jacket.

BLACK ARROW LABEL LAUNCH: Sydney

Local start-up label Black Arrow Label (founded by fashion designer and rider Hannah Smith) launched its first product offering last month in Sydney. Like many of us frustrated with the lack of offerings available for women who ride, Hannah put her fashion design skills and entrepreneurial spirit to actually doing something about it.

KICKSTARTER: Tobacco Motorwear Women's Jeans

Following the success of their men's range of kevlar denim, the team behind the Tobacco Motorwear company are responding to the demands of more women wanting a road tested denim that looks and feels like our favourite pair of jeans via their kickstarter campaign.

ROAD STYLE: Carina

Carina is an awesome example of dressing for your style while not compromising on safety. Her look is so strong it’s hard to tell it's protective gear. She rocks a Dainese jacket with armour, a full faced Simpson bandit helmet, Ugly Bros kevlar denim jeans and leather boots, which perfectly complement her Custom Honda VTR250...

ROAD STYLE: Julz

Mad Max immediately comes to mind when describing Julia's style – it’s rough, tough and very cool and perfectly suits her brappy Honda XR400. Juls is a hot-chocolate drinking, screaming Banshee and abuses her motorcycle gear!  Her daily holy trinity (boots, helmet, jacket) includes: ...

Red, White and Blue

Recent Petrolette Tara Henry was encouraged into Dirt by her friends at the Deus Ex Machina in Venice, CA so a lot of her gear and bikes are from within the same crew. Deus and Ornamental Conifer collaborated on this light weight cotton shirt with dirt-track intentions called the OC/D Moto worn over her armour and tucked into her Troy Lee Designs GP Air Pants.

In-VEST-ed

Maybe I've been living in a bubble (okay, highly likely I've been living in a bubble), but I had never thought to look for a leather vest for riding. The association with leather vests and motorcycles, in my mind, is not really high on the fashion stakes. They're usually badass, patched with a hoodie under and sometimes a fringe to boot... but Lindsay has shone a new light on this bit of gear.

Vada Ranger by Roland Sands Design

We recently featured Hannah's style story on her Yamaha SR400 and perfectly coordinated look, and wanted to take a moment to show her Vada Ranger by Roland Sands Design. All RSD motorcycle jackets for women are designed to be well worn and are the best around for a feminine silhouette with the protection of removable armour.

ROAD STYLE: Hannah

Every time I see Hannah out and about I'm always impressed by her co-ordinated and striking silhouette while on her Yamaha SR400 (which she can kick start, first go, every time). Few have the patience and commitment to find beautiful gear that doesn't turn its back on safety, but Hannah has in a way that it totally unique to her.

Snow White

Why do we perceive that any woman who represents a male dominated community, is simply seen as a hired pacifier rather than an integral part?  After being nicknamed "Snow White" I ask myself who are the seven dwarves I represent and why is there so much judgement targeted at us motorcyclists and Petrolettes?

IN THEIR SHOES: Footwear

We take a look at some of the more popular boots seen on the road that are not manufactured or designed as motorcycle boots and discuss their style and safety to help you make a more informed decision when you see these out and about. Before reading this, have a look at our guide to riding boots for an overview on what is important before deciding on a riding boot for your riding, style and experience.

THE POSTMAN DREAMS: Prada

A friend recently tagged IVV in Prada's latest campaign promoting their iconic Galleria bag, and it sent me down a rabbit hole of luxury and fantasy as only will happen with one of the biggest luxury fashion houses teams up with photographer and director Autumn de Wilde ... AND throws in a Triumph cafe racer and Bell Bullitt in the mix.
